Arvidsson leads the way, and Gibson backstops the Red Wings to a win over the Blackhawks.
The Detroit Red Wings delivered an impressive performance Thursday night, October 29, defeating their longtime Original Six rival, Chicago Blackhawks, 4-1.
Viktor Arvidsson stole the spotlight with three goals and an assist, recording his sixth career NHL hat trick.
Lucas Raymond added a power-play goal, Alex DeBrincat collected two assists, and goaltender John Gibson turned aside 18 of 19 shots as the Red Wings improved to 6-4-3 on the season.
Chicago wasted little time putting pressure on Detroit.
At 5:59 of the opening period, young superstar Connor Bedard opened the scoring after collecting a rebound from Wyatt Kaiser's shot and slipping the puck past Gibson. Roman Kantserov also earned an assist, his first in the NHL.
Despite the early deficit, Detroit seemed to get a jolt of energy on a late power play in the first period, even though they didn't score. The Red Wings took control of the game from that point on.
The momentum fully shifted in the second period when Arvidsson redirected a shot from defenseman William Wallinder past Chicago goaltender Spencer Knight at 7:31, tying the game 1-1. DeBrincat also earned an assist on the play.
One of the game's biggest moments came midway through the period when Chicago forward Frank Nazar was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked by Detroit defenseman Andreas Englund from behind on a breakaway.
Gibson stood tall and beat Nazar to the post on the deke to his backhand, making a crucial save to preserve the tie.
The Red Wings took their first lead just 1:09 into the third period.
With former Detroit forward Patrick Kane serving a high-sticking penalty, Lucas Raymond fired a shot from the right circle past Knight to give Detroit a 2-1 advantage. Arvidsson and Moritz Seider earned assists on the power-play goal.
With 4:34 remaining in regulation, Arvidsson scored his second goal of the evening after finishing a rebound opportunity in front of the Chicago net. DeBrincat and J.T. Compher assisted on the goal, extending Detroit's lead to 3-1.
Less than two minutes later, Arvidsson completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal at 16:45, putting the finishing touches on a convincing 4-1 victory.
