The Canadiens finally score in the sixth round of the shootout to beat the Red Wings.
The Detroit Red Wings entered Saturday night's matchup against the Montreal Canadiens looking to rebound from a disappointing loss to the Seattle Kraken. Instead, Detroit found itself in another frustrating battle, falling 1-0 in a shootout at the Bell Centre.
Playing on back-to-back nights, the Red Wings came out a little slow but then responded well to make this an evenly played game for all 65 minutes.
The Atlantic Division showdown featured outstanding goaltending and missed offensive opportunities for both teams. Despite earning a point in the standings, the Red Wings left Montreal still searching for answers offensively.
Red Wing goalie Daniil Tarasov delivered exactly the kind of performance the Red Wings needed, stopping all 30 Montreal shots through regulation and overtime.
At the opposite end, Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler matched him save for save, turning aside all 30 Detroit shots.
Neither team managed to score during regulation, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the teams continued to trade chances. End to end, though, every shot was met by goalies who were up to the task.
Overtime featured the second goal to be overturned in the game for the Canadiens. Earlier in the game, they were called for goaltender interference. In overtime, the Canadiens thought they had won, but after review, they were offside.
The shootout was just as close. Both Tarasov and Fowler refused to give up a goal through five rounds.
Then Zachary Bolduc finally broke through and scored the game winner. He even lost the puck and had to go all the way towards the boards to regroup, then come in and shoot it glove-side by Tarasov.
Nate Danielson had a last chance to tie it for the Red Wings; he fired it right into Fowler's pads, giving the Canadiens the 1-0 win.
