Taylor catches fire after halftime as the Sky snap the Mercury's momentum with a convincing road victory in Phoenix.
PHOENIX - Sydney Taylor erupted in the third quarter to help the Chicago Sky take control, scoring 10 of her 16 points after halftime as Chicago defeated the Phoenix Mercury 77-66 on Tuesday night at Footprint Center.
The victory improved the Sky to 7-14 on the season while ending the Mercury's recent run of success after Phoenix had won four of its previous five games. Chicago leaned on timely scoring, strong defense, and balanced contributions throughout the lineup to secure an important road win.
After a tightly contested first half, Taylor completely changed the momentum coming out of the locker room. The rookie scored Chicago's first 10 points of the third quarter, repeatedly attacking the defense and knocking down timely shots to ignite the Sky's offense. Her scoring outburst helped transform a close game into one firmly under Chicago's control.
Taylor's offensive explosion allowed the Sky to build a seven-point advantage early in the period, and they never looked back. Chicago continued to execute on both ends of the floor, closing the third quarter with a commanding 56-44 lead while frustrating a Mercury offense that struggled to generate consistent production outside of Kahleah Copper.
Natasha Cloud provided veteran leadership throughout the contest, finishing with 11 points and six assists while orchestrating Chicago's offense. Cloud controlled the pace, distributed the ball effectively, and helped the Sky capitalize on scoring opportunities whenever Phoenix attempted to mount a comeback.
Azura Stevens also made her presence felt with another solid all-around performance. The veteran forward recorded nine points and 10 rebounds, giving Chicago valuable production in the paint while helping the Sky win the battle on the boards. Her defensive effort limited Phoenix's second-chance opportunities and provided stability throughout the game.
Despite playing without All-Star guard Skylar Diggins, who missed the game because of a right knee injury, Chicago showcased its depth and resilience. Several players stepped up to fill the void, with Taylor's offensive breakout serving as the catalyst for one of the team's most complete performances of the season.
Phoenix struggled to find offensive consistency despite another outstanding performance from Copper. Facing her former team, the veteran guard led all scorers with 25 points and connected on four three-pointers, keeping the Mercury within striking distance for much of the contest. However, Chicago's disciplined defense prevented Phoenix from building sustained momentum.
DeWanna Bonner added 12 points in the loss while making WNBA history in the process. Bonner became the first player in league history to reach the remarkable milestones of 8,000 career points, 3,000 rebounds, and 500 steals, another testament to her longevity and all-around excellence throughout an accomplished career.
Alyssa Thomas contributed another versatile stat line with 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals, but the Mercury were unable to overcome their sluggish third quarter. Chicago's defensive pressure forced difficult shots and limited Phoenix's offensive rhythm during the decisive stretch of the game.
The Mercury attempted one final rally in the closing minutes. Copper knocked down a three-pointer with 1:02 remaining to cut the deficit to 74-66, giving the home crowd a brief sense of hope. However, the Sky answered immediately on the next possession when Jacy Sheldon buried a clutch three-pointer, her only points of the night to restore a double-digit advantage and put the game out of reach.
Chicago's ability to respond under pressure highlighted the composure the team displayed throughout the evening. Every time Phoenix threatened to make a run, the Sky answered with timely baskets, solid defense, or crucial rebounding plays to maintain control.
The win gives Chicago valuable momentum as it continues a challenging stretch of the regular season. Contributions from Taylor, Cloud, Stevens, and the supporting cast demonstrated the balanced approach the Sky will need as they push toward the second half of the season.
Meanwhile, Phoenix will look to regroup after seeing its recent winning stretch come to an end. While Copper continued her strong play and Bonner reached a historic career milestone, the Mercury will aim for a more complete team performance when they return to action later this week.
Chicago next travels to Los Angeles on Friday, while Phoenix returns home to host Indiana on Thursday.
