Fever Survive Sky’s Late Push, Beat Chicago 90-86 Behind Clark and Mitchell

Indiana’s two leading scorers combined for 53 points as the Fever weathered an ejection, Clark’s eighth technical and another tense finish in Chicago

Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell carried the Indiana Fever through another turbulent afternoon, combining for 53 points as Indiana held off the Chicago Sky 90-86 Saturday at the United Center.

The Fever built a lead as large as 17 points but could not put Chicago away cleanly. The Sky kept chipping at the deficit and pulled within one possession late, forcing Indiana to execute under pressure for the second time in three days after close losses to Minnesota and Las Vegas. This time, the Fever finished the job.

Mitchell led Indiana with 27 points in 36 minutes, while Clark delivered 26 points and 11 assists for her double-double. Aliyah Boston added 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Fever improved to 20-12.

Carrington’s Early Exit Changes the Game

The afternoon turned heated almost immediately.

DiJonai Carrington had already scored eight points in just three minutes, making all three of her field-goal attempts and her only free throw, when she was ejected following a Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham.

Carrington struck Cunningham in the face with her left arm as Cunningham went up for a layup, sending the Fever forward to the floor. Cunningham quickly got back up and confronted Carrington before Makayla Timpson and Fever security separated the players.

After a review, officials upgraded the foul to a Flagrant 2 and disqualified Carrington for the remainder of the game. Chicago lost one of its most productive players almost as quickly as she had established herself offensively.

Indiana took advantage as the game progressed, with Mitchell providing the scoring punch and Clark creating opportunities for herself and her teammates. The Fever's lead eventually reached 17, but Chicago continued to hang around.

Clark’s Technical Adds Another Complication

The Fever's advantage became more fragile in the third quarter.

With 1:06 remaining, Clark was assessed a technical foul after she made contact with official Genesis Perrymond following physical baseline contact from Chicago guard Natasha Cloud. Clark reacted with disbelief after the call, and Indiana coach Stephanie White was subsequently assessed a technical of her own while arguing the decision.

For Clark, the technical carried consequences beyond the afternoon.

It was her eighth technical foul of the season, which triggers an automatic one-game suspension under WNBA rules unless the league rescinds the technical following its review. Unless that happens, Clark is set to miss Indiana’s Tuesday game against New York.

The timing was especially notable because Clark had already been at the center of another tense finish Thursday. After missing two free throws in crunch time against Las Vegas, she faced another late opportunity Saturday with the Fever's lead shrinking.

Chicago Makes One More Push

The Sky refused to go quietly.

Indiana's offense had controlled stretches of the game, but Chicago kept applying pressure in the fourth quarter. A shot-clock violation with about a minute remaining gave the Sky another opening, and the deficit eventually fell to one possession with 17 seconds on the clock.

Chicago received 17 points each from Natasha Cloud and Rachel Banham, while Kamilla Cardoso finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Sky had enough offensive production to make Indiana sweat, even after losing Carrington so early.

But Mitchell and Clark had already done enough to give the Fever room for error.

Clark went to the free-throw line with the game still in doubt and converted one of two attempts. It was not a perfect trip, but the make pushed Indiana into a two-possession lead and left Chicago with too little time to complete the comeback.

Fever Finally Close One Out

Indiana's 90-86 victory was not spotless, and it certainly was not comfortable. But after two straight close losses, the Fever needed the kind of win that required them to absorb adversity and still finish.

Mitchell's 27 points and Clark's 26 points gave Indiana the offensive foundation. Boston's 13 points and 11 rebounds provided another steady interior contribution, while the Fever survived Carrington's early ejection, Clark's technical and Chicago's late charge.

Now Indiana faces another challenge. Clark's eighth technical puts her availability for Tuesday against New York in question, leaving the Fever waiting on the league's review while carrying momentum from a win they had to fight for until the final seconds.
