Rising Star Sets the Tone Early as Seattle Cruises to an 82-64 Road Victory Over Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES Flau'jae Johnson delivered one of her most complete performances of the season on Monday night, earning Player of the Game honors after scoring a game-high 23 points to lead the Seattle Storm to an impressive 82-64 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.

Johnson was the driving force behind Seattle's offense from the opening tip, helping the Storm improve to 6-17 on the season while securing just their second road victory of the year. Her explosive start, efficient scoring, and ability to create momentum early allowed Seattle to take control and never look back.

The talented guard wasted no time making her presence felt.

Johnson erupted for 13 points in the opening quarter, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc as the Storm raced to a 20-15 lead. Her hot shooting immediately put pressure on the Sparks' defense and energized Seattle on both ends of the floor.

By halftime, the Storm had stretched their advantage to 48-37 after combining Johnson's offensive production with a suffocating defensive effort. Seattle limited Los Angeles to just 16.7 percent shooting from three-point range during the first half, making it difficult for the Sparks to generate any offensive rhythm.

Johnson continued to make smart decisions throughout the second half, attacking scoring opportunities while allowing her teammates to contribute offensively. She finished with a game-high 23 points, once again proving capable of carrying the scoring load whenever Seattle needed a big basket.

While Johnson led the offense, the Storm received strong support from several teammates.

Natisha Hiedeman added 15 points, providing another consistent scoring option throughout the contest. Jade Melbourne contributed 11 points, while Katie Lou Samuelson knocked down three three-pointers to finish with nine points.

Seattle also excelled on the defensive end, forcing turnovers and turning them into valuable scoring opportunities. The Storm collected 14 steals, with Awa Fam accounting for four of them as Seattle's aggressive defense repeatedly disrupted the Sparks' offense.

The game effectively swung in Seattle's favor during the third quarter.

After taking an 11-point lead into halftime, the Storm completely shut down Los Angeles in the third period. The Sparks managed only eight points, their lowest-scoring quarter of the season, as Seattle extended its lead to 68-48 entering the final quarter.

The defensive intensity, combined with Johnson's continued offensive leadership, prevented Los Angeles from mounting any serious comeback.

Despite the loss, Dearica Hamby led the Sparks with 17 points, while former Seattle star Nneka Ogwumike recorded a double-double against her former team with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Los Angeles also continued to deal with injuries, playing without Kelsey Plum because of a lower left leg injury and Cameron Brink due to a left ankle injury.

The game also featured a historic milestone for Seattle rookie Dominique Malonga. The young forward grabbed nine rebounds and became the youngest player in WNBA history to reach 300 career rebounds, as well as the first player under the age of 21 to accomplish the feat.

Adding to the night's atmosphere, South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley and NBA superstar Kevin Durant were among those in attendance to watch the matchup.

For Seattle, however, the spotlight belonged to Flau'jae Johnson.

Her outstanding first-quarter performance established the tone for the entire game, and her game-high 23 points highlighted one of her strongest outings of the season. Johnson's ability to score from long range, attack the basket, and provide leadership throughout the contest made her the clear difference-maker in Seattle's convincing road victory.

As the Storm prepare for a road matchup against the Atlanta Dream on Thursday, Johnson's performance provides plenty of momentum for a team looking to build consistency during the second half of the season. If she continues to play with the same confidence and efficiency she displayed against Los Angeles, Seattle will have a strong foundation to compete in the games ahead.
