Chicago erases an early Pittsburgh lead with a nine-run stretch from the second through fourth innings, then adds three more runs late to complete a dominant victory

The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-2, at Wrigley Field, overcoming an early deficit with a sustained offensive attack that turned a one-run game into a runaway victory. Pittsburgh struck first in the top of the first inning when Konnor Griffin tripled and scored on an RBI single by Oneil Cruz, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Griffin’s triple was his third of the season and immediately put Pittsburgh in position to capitalize, while Cruz delivered the first run of the afternoon with a line-drive single. The Pirates threatened to build on that advantage, but Chicago’s pitching limited the damage and the Cubs quickly found their response. The game remained competitive only briefly, as Chicago produced three runs in the second inning, two more in the third and another four in the fourth to establish a commanding 9-1 advantage. From there, the Cubs’ offense continued to apply pressure, eventually finishing with 12 runs on 16 hits. Pittsburgh managed only seven hits and struggled to sustain rallies after its early breakthrough.

Chicago’s comeback began in the bottom of the second, when the Cubs assembled a productive sequence against Pittsburgh starter Wilber Dotel. Alex Bregman and Ian Happ opened the inning with consecutive singles before Nico Hoerner added another hit to load the bases. Michael Conforto followed with a sacrifice fly that brought Bregman home, tying the game at 1-1. The Cubs then regained the lead when Carson Kelly delivered a two-run double, scoring Happ and Pedro Ramírez to make it 3-1. Kelly’s extra-base hit provided the decisive early swing in momentum and give Chicago its first lead of the afternoon. Pittsburgh could not answer in the top of the third, and Chicago took advantage again in the bottom half. Seiya Suzuki singled, and Michael Busch followed with a double that brought Suzuki home. Busch then advanced to third on a throwing error by right fielder Esmerlyn Valdez, creating another scoring opportunity. Hoerner subsequently grounded into a forceout that allowed Busch to score, extending the Cubs’ lead to 5-1. Chicago added another single from Conforto before Pittsburgh finally escaped the inning.

The Cubs broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, turning a 5-1 advantage into a 9-1 cushion. Carson Kelly began the inning by being hit by a pitch, and Pete Crow-Armstrong followed with a walk. Suzuki then drove in Kelly with a single, putting Chicago ahead 6-1. Busch added another run with a sacrifice fly that scored Crow-Armstrong. The biggest blow came moments later from Alex Bregman, who launched a two-run home run to left field, his 25th homer of the season, scoring Suzuki and pushing the Cubs’ lead to 9-1. Bregman’s home run capped a four-run inning and gave Chicago complete control of the game. Nico Hoerner added a double later in the inning, although the Cubs could not add another run before the third out. Chicago’s ability to consistently move runners into scoring position and capitalize with productive at-bats proved to be the central difference in the contest. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, was unable to match the Cubs’ offensive efficiency after its first-inning run and went quietly through the fourth and fifth innings.

Pittsburgh finally got another run in the top of the sixth, but by then Chicago had already created too large a deficit to seriously threaten its lead. Bryan Reynolds hit a solo home run, his 17th of the season, cutting the Cubs’ advantage from 9-1 to 9-2. The Pirates were unable to turn the home run into a larger rally, however, and Chicago immediately answered in the bottom of the inning. Suzuki tripled, giving the Cubs another runner in scoring position, and Busch followed with an RBI single to bring him home. Bregman then doubled, and Tyrone Taylor added a sacrifice fly that scored Busch, extending Chicago’s advantage to 11-2. The Cubs finished the inning with a nine-run lead and continued to receive contributions from throughout the lineup. Suzuki, Busch and Bregman were particularly important in the middle innings, combining for multiple hits and driving in runs as Chicago repeatedly pressured Pittsburgh’s pitching. The Pirates used Antwone Kelly in relief during the sixth after Khristian Curtis, but the Cubs still managed to add two more runs in the frame.

Chicago added its final run in the bottom of the seventh, putting the finishing touches on its 12-2 victory. Pedro Ramírez opened the inning with a double, and Carson Kelly followed with a single that moved Ramírez to third. Crow-Armstrong then delivered an RBI single, scoring Ramírez and increasing the Cubs’ lead to 12-2. Chicago threatened to do more, but Suzuki grounded into a double play to end the inning. Pittsburgh could not generate any late comeback attempt, with Chicago’s bullpen and defense keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard over the final two innings. The Cubs also made several defensive adjustments as the game progressed, while Pittsburgh continued rotating players into different positions. One notable development for the Pirates was Ryan O’Hearn’s return from the injured list. O’Hearn entered as a pinch-hitter for Henry Davis in the seventh and remained in the game at first base. He later grounded into no further offensive production, flying out to center field in the ninth.

The final numbers reflected Chicago’s control of the game from the second inning onward. The Cubs finished with 16 hits and 12 runs, producing multiple scoring innings and receiving contributions throughout the batting order. Carson Kelly’s two-run double, Michael Busch’s run-producing hits and sacrifice fly, Seiya Suzuki’s multi-hit performance and Alex Bregman’s two-run homer were among the key offensive moments that drove the victory. Bregman also added a double, while Nico Hoerner contributed a double and RBI forceout. Pittsburgh’s offense was led by Reynolds’ solo home run and Griffin’s first-inning triple, but the Pirates were unable to maintain the momentum created by their early 1-0 lead. The loss ultimately became a one-sided result after Chicago scored 11 of the game’s final 12 runs. For the Cubs, the victory showcased an offense capable of sustaining pressure across multiple innings, while Pittsburgh will look to regroup after being held to two runs despite striking first. The Pirates also saw O’Hearn begin his return to action, giving them an important veteran option as they continue through the home stretch of the season.
