Garand made 22 saves to earn his first career shutout in the Rangers' 2-0 win.

The New York Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 behind a 22 save shutout from Dylan Garand in his first start of the season.

The first seven minutes of the game were dominated by the Rangers. They scored on the first power play of the game. Sean Durzi scored on a slap shot from Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle at the 5:12 mark of the first period.

The Rangers went right back to the power play minutes later, but couldn’t convert. The Red Wings didn’t get a shot on goal until 6:39 into the game.

The game was nip and tuck the rest of the way, with some unsportsmanlike penalties and a fight between Marco Kasper and Durzi in the second period.

The Red Wings had two power play opportunities, but couldn’t convert. They struggled to get quality scoring chances all game on Garand.

Wings made a push to score in the third, but couldn’t find the back of the net. They pulled goalie John Gibson with a few minutes remaining in the game, but the Rangers were able to clear the puck, and Eeli Tolvanen scored the empty net goal at the 18:44 mark to put the game on ice.

The Red Wings outshot the Rangers 22-21 in the game, but the slow start and lack of quality offensive chances hurt them in this game.
