Guskiewicz’s Return Complicates Batt’s Departure from MSU

Kevin Guskiewicz’s stunning decision to remain President at Michigan State University throws a wrench into J. Batt's buyout and leaves Tom Izzo pleased

In a shocking turn of events, it was announced that Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz would be returning to the same role at MSU. He will no longer be leaving for Clemson. That is great news for the University as the “the best president that’s ever been here, maybe,” as quoted by Tom Izzo, will remain with the school.

Following the announcement of Guskiewicz’ return it was confirmed that J. Batt is still expected to depart MSU for Kentucky. Kentucky’s president Eli Capilouto reaffirmed J. Batt’s commitment to the Wildcats on his X account in a conversation they had earlier in the day on Monday July 6.

“J. Batt and I spoke this afternoon and he has reinforced his commitment to UK and his excitement about joining the Big Blue Nation as soon as possible,” Capilouto tweeted. “We are excited about J and his family joining us soon. We look forward to J hitting the ground running as CEO of Champions Blue and @UKAthletics Director at the @universityofky.”

Although Batt still intends to leave for Kentucky, Guskiewicz’ decision raises the price for Kentucky to land him. There was a clause in J. Batt’s contract that lowered his buyout from $5 million to $2.5 million after President Guskiewicz decided to leave for Clemson University. Now that Guskiewicz is back, that clause could be revoked. Kentucky might be looking at paying J. Batt the full $5 million for his exit from MSU.

It is still uncertain as to how much Kentucky will have to end up paying MSU for J. Batt’s buyout after the unexpected turn around from President Guskiewicz. For now, MSU at least has a president back in place and some stability back in the office, and no one is happier than Tom Izzo. Michigan State put out a statement in which Izzo called for a “moment of unity” and is very pleased with Guskiewicz’ return to the University.

“Although I’ve always believed that no one individual is larger than the program or the University, strong leadership matters greatly. The progress we’ve made as a university and the philanthropic support shown by our donors are evidence of momentum and belief in our future under his leadership,” Izzo said in his statement. “As President Guskiewicz reaffirms his commitment to Michigan State University, this is a chance for every Spartan to do the same. For the 600,000 living alums, and everyone who calls themselves a Spartan, this is a moment for unity.”

The Spartans have their president back while the athletic director is still on the move. It is unknown how much money the school will receive for J. Batt’s departure. However, when Coach Izzo is happy, MSU is happy.
