Yuzvendra Chahal has given up on playing test cricket for the national cricket team.
As a leg spinner and a quirky member of the Indian team, Yuzvendra Chahal has enjoyed a lot of fame during his peak years. But lately, his career seems to be going downhill with no visible way to make a comeback. Chahal would debut for India in 2016 and immediately prove himself worthy of the cap in the limited-overs format. Initially, he was not a part of the Test cricket squad, but the fans believed that one day Chahal would get the opportunity to bring his leg spin to the red-ball format.
Looking back at his career now, more than a decade has passed since his first international match, and Yuzi never got to live his dream. He did play first-class cricket and enjoyed the red-ball format with English county cricket clubs, but the lack of confidence shown by the Indian team has led him to announce his retirement from the same. Chahal announced this decision through his official Instagram handle.
He hasn’t given up on limited-overs cricket, though, and is trying to return
After being ignored by the Indian Test cricket team, Yuzi got to fulfill his dream with English cricket clubs. When he was not named in the Asia Cup or the ODI World Cup teams, Chahal decided to sign short-term contracts with English cricket clubs. He appeared in the final matches of the 2023 County Championship and later joined the Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in 2024.
Speaking about his retirement, Chahal was rather emotional about his unfulfilled dream: “For me, red-ball cricket was never just another format,” Chahal said in his Instagram post. “It was where I learned the meaning of patience, character, resilience, and the pure joy of being out there for hours, fighting for every run and every wicket.”
“I played my last First-Class match at Lord’s. Saying these words is emotional, as a Test cap was always a dream, one that I carried with me for many years. It may not have happened, but I am genuinely content with the journey I have had and incredibly grateful for every opportunity that came my way in this format.”
He has expressed his willingness to return to the Indian team in the limited-overs format, but even that feels like a remote possibility at this rate. Chahal hasn’t played any international match for the Indian team since 2023. Moreover, the condition of the Indian pitches does not exactly promote a leg spinner like Chahal. His condition is worse than that of Kuldeep Yadav, who used to create a formidable pairing with him during his international career.
