The Michigan State volleyball team wins its sixth straight game to start the season against the Western Michigan Broncos.
Michigan State volleyball has gotten off to a hot start this season with six straight wins and an undefeated start after a 3-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos at the Breslin Center tonight. This was the Broncos’ first loss of the season as they fell to a record of 6-1. Michigan State won all three sets tonight 25-18, 25-19, and 25-14. The three straight sets won by the Spartans tonight mark 17 straight sets won by the Spartans so far this season. They are six away from tying their record of 23 back in 2018.
The Spartans led the Broncos for a majority of the night as they dominated from the opening serve and never let go. The match never really felt like the Spartans were in risk of losing it, they just continued to play steady volleyball all night. The blockers for MSU were the standout in this matchup. They may have only recorded seven blocks as opposed to Western Michigan’s three, but they were in impactful moments. Carmen Waye led the team with four, Alanna Bankston had three blocks and Zora Hardison and Hayley Ogden were tied with two apiece. MSU’s blockers were getting up over the net for blocks preventing the WMU offense from getting anything going.
Malayah Long was everywhere on the court for MSU as she led the team in assists with 34 which surpassed the Broncos’ entire team combined assists which was 31. Long was always there with a set to provide the Spartans offense chances at kills to take out the WMU defense. The Spartans always responded anytime Western would go on a small run to tie up the game. MSU’s offense had an answer and would continue to pull away , never making the match seem too close.
MSU’s next match is in Morehead, Kentucky as they head to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday, September 11 at 4pm. They will look to continue their hot streak and continue towards their record of 23 straight sets won from back in 2018.
