Jahmyr Gibbs Receives a Contract Extension

Share

Gibbs has ended his hold-in with the Lions as he has finally earned a well-deserved contract extension.

Jahmyr Gibbs has been holding in from Lions training camp while he has been looking for a new contract extension this offseason. His draft mate Bijan Robinson was recently rewarded with a three-year $75 million contract and it was expected Gibbs’ contract will be similar in length and numbers to Robinson’s extension. Well, as Gibbs showed up to practice in pads today it was expected that progress was made on his contract, and now he has officially signed his extension with the Lions.

He was only spotted working with a trainer off the field earlier, but Gibbs was still seen at practice after missing the first six practice sessions for the Lions. That came as a relief to fans and coaches as Gibbs will finally be working with the new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and be able to work with the new offensive line. Dan Campbell commented on Tuesday about how anxious he was to have Gibbs back on the field, and now he has him back.

“I’m anxious to get Gibbs back out there,” Campbell said on Tuesday. “Every day that goes by, that’s another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part.”

Drew Petzing also added comments today about Gibbs’ return to the practice field.

“I know he’s going to be ready when the moment comes.”

Seeing Gibbs back at practice sparked thoughts on how his contract extension with the Lions was coming along. Gibbs gave a non-verbal answer when he was spotted at camp when asked about his contract talks with the Lions. Gibbs gave the media a thumbs up when he was exiting the practice facility in uniform. Well, now that has been made official as Jahmyr Gibbs has signed a three-year $67.5 million deal that could be worth up to $75.75 million, making him the highest paid running back in the league. It was expected whoever was paid last between Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs would be the highest paid running back in the league, and now that has officially come true. $51.5 million of Gibbs’ contract is guaranteed and his yearly average sits at $22.25 million, a whole .25 million dollars higher than Robinson’s annual salary. Gibbs has more than earned his extension with the Lions with how he has performed on the field. Now that David Montgomery is out of the backfield, he will be getting more carries and more touches in the Lions offense as he becomes the workhorse in the ground game. A well-deserved contract extension for Jahmyr Gibbs.

With Gibbs back at camp and an extension finally announced, the Lions are in a good spot to start the year with all their stars under contract. The running back market is as good as it has ever been and Jahmyr Gibbs is part of the reason why.
