Connor scored two power play goals to lead the Jets over the Red Wings
The Winnipeg Jets used two early power play goals and three total to hold onto a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Michigan native Kyle Connor had a huge part in all three goals scored by the Jets.
The Red Wings took two undisciplined penalties, which did not help their case with a struggling penalty kill unit. Keegan Kolesar got an extra two-minute unsportsmanlike penalty after he fought Tyrel Bauer. That led to a goal from Cole Perfetti, with assists from Connor and Josh Morrissey.
The Red Wings took another undisciplined penalty when J.T. Compher received a minor for abuse of the officials. Connor added his first goal 1:32 seconds after the first goal. Gabriel Vilardi and Perfetti had the assists, giving the Jets an early 2-0 lead with 5:24 left in the first period.
The Jets added their third power play goal early in the second period. Connor netted his second goal of the game with assists from Morrissey and Perfetti, again on the power play with 14:19 left in the second period.
Viktor Arvidsson would finally score the Red Wings first goal of the season with 3:08 left in the middle period, getting assists from Andrew Copp and Moritz Seider. Arvidsson was a key free agent signing for the Red Wings this offseason.
Emmitt Finnie made it a one goal game early in the third period. He scored on passes from Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Alex DeBrincat.
Despite getting chances on the goaltender for the Jets, Stuart Skinner, the Red Wings couldn’t get the third goal to tie the game. Skinner played well with 33 saves, including a late save on Lucas Raymond to prevent overtime.
That was the first win for the Jets this season. They are 1-0-1, while the Red Wings fell to 0-2-0.
