The Detroit Lions are no strangers to injuries the past few years. The team has been decimated by injuries in the regular season and postseason all throughout the Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell era. In training camp and the preseason this year the running backs room has been left a little thin due to injuries. Jahmyr Gibbs is obviously good to go, Isiah Pacheco is dealing with an MCL Sprain, Sione Vaki is out with an eye injury and a broken nose and Jabari Small recently left the last preseason game with a concussion which could keep him out this week. Pacheco is assumed the running back two on the roster but with Vaki out, the third spot is up for grabs on the roster.

Jacob Saylors has been playing well in the preseason and looks to earn that spot but the Lions recently added a running back to add some depth to the position amongst all the injuries. Undrafted rookie Roydell Williams out of Florida State University was signed by the Lions to help deepen the room during the last week of the preseason. Williams played four years at Alabama in college as a reserve player before he transferred to Florida State for the final year of his collegiate career. Williams went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft before he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts and eventually released to make room for the signing of Keenan Allen.

The Williams signing allows Detroit to not have to rush any running backs back from injury too quickly. It is likely the final preseason game will see Jacob Saylors, Treyveon Williams, Raheem Blackshear, and Roydell Williams go at it barring any injuries. Williams will ensure that Pacheco, Vaki, or Small do not have to rush back from injury and risk any future injuries. It will also give Williams a chance to shine and showcase his talent to make a spot on the practice squad, ala Jake Fromm from a few years ago when he was signed, made a splash during the preseason, and kept a practice squad spot.

Roydell Williams is not a splash signing for the Detroit Lions and he may not even make a roster spot or practice squad spot when all is said and done. It is just a strategic signing by the Lions to ensure they get their running backs healthy and available for the beginning of the regular season so that Jahmyr Gibbs has depth to give him a rest every once in a while. Williams could end up proving himself and making a spot with the rest of the preseason in front of him. Until then, the Lions look to get healthy and rest up the players while Williams looks to shine.
