It’s that time of the week for a new round of overreactions after a fun weekend of NFL action.
Week four of the NFL season has wrapped up with the Atlanta Falcons rocking the New Orleans Saints in the 20th anniversary of the “Domecoming” game after Hurricane Katrina. Maybe the Falcons will not end up owning the first overall pick after all, as reacted a few weeks ago. With the end of the week comes more overreactions about games going forward. The Eagles look like an absolute mess, but nobody in the NFC East seems strong enough to pull away atop the division. The Raiders may actually be able to maintain their good play this season. How about the Cleveland Browns, out of all teams? Who would have thought? There are lots to discuss after a week full of great games.
There will be a massive overhaul in Philly
Let’s put it straight, the Eagles are a complete and total mess right now, and even in their two wins this season, they have not looked too good. Two close wins over the Commanders and the Titans are teams they should easily be able to handle, given the talent on display in Philly. The last two games have shown more weaknesses within the Eagles, and they are starting to show cracks in the system that were apparent when A.J. Brown was on the sideline. Jalen Hurts is coming off of a game where they led 20-10 going into the half, and in the second half, after Saquon Barkley left the game with an injury, Hurts proceeded to complete only two passes for 10 yards in the second half. Simply put, it was an ugly showing. This performance is coming off of another bad performance where the Eagles defense was diced up by Case Keenum on Monday Night Football, and Jalen Hurts played an inefficient game for Philadelphia. This is now back-to-back bad performances, and the Eagles have looked like they have continued sputtering like they did at the end of last year. The coordinator change has yet to help so far this year, as Saquon has been a no-show as well. Barkley really has not shown up much since his magical Super Bowl 2,000-yard season. It seems like the troubles in Philly could be brewing and leading to some massive overhaul, even though they have won the NFC East in back-to-back years. The Cowboys look to be better this year, and so do the Giants, even though Jaxson Dart is out for the year. Nick Sirianni seems like he is a hot-seat candidate with how the team has been playing, and Jalen Hurts could be on his way out the door if this poor play continues. Sirianni has had really good seasons when his coordinators are good and has not shown to do too much outside of that other than being able to win games due to the talent of Philly’s roster. The offense is a disaster, the defense can’t hold on to leads this year, this might be the time where the Eagles reset the roster and coaching staff.
Bryce Young will finish in top three for MVP voting
“Hey, wasn’t that guy considered a bust a few years ago when he was benched for Andy Dalton?” Why yes, the average reader, he was considered in bust watch after that switch was made. Crazy what happens when a franchise gives a quarterback time to develop by having time to sit down, learn the reins again, and take back control of the offense.
Bryce Young was dead in the water a few years ago when Andy Dalton was announced the starter over him, and he was being benched. Since Dalton got in a car crash and Young had to come back in for the Panthers, he has never looked back and gotten better each year. The Panthers the next year gave him a number one receiver in the draft by taking Tetairoa McMillan, who took home the offensive rookie of the year award last season. Young has had an immense amount of confidence this season, and the Panthers are favorites to win the NFC South this year after they won the division last year and took the Rams to the brink in the wild-card round.
Yes, Young did just have great numbers against a Lions defense that has let every quarterback they have played this season look like the greatest thing since sliced bread. But Young had led the league in passing yards before that game took place anyways, and he continues to after that game. He has thrown for 1,268 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions through four games. That’s pretty good if you ask me. At Young’s pace, he is on track for 5,072 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. If the Panthers win the division with a winning record this year, there’s no reason why Young should not be considered for the MVP award at the end of the season.
Justin Herbert gets a change of scenery by the end of the year
The Chargers are spiraling out of control right now, and it does not look good with the upcoming schedule for the rest of the season. 0-3 is already a hard enough hole to dig out of, and now 0-4 makes it almost impossible. I’ve already talked about this in detail in the Week 2 edition of NFL Overreaction Tuesday, so we will spin the wheels and mention something else from the team this year.
Justin Herbert has not played well as part of this Chargers awful start, and the Mike McDaniel offense has not clicked for him quite yet. Only 816 passing yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions to start the year is not a good look for Herbert. The weapons have been underwhelming, and so has the offensive line. Something like this feels like this marriage with the Chargers is not going to work out and could be headed for a divorce.
Something along the lines of Matthew Stafford, where he spends all his time in Detroit putting up insane numbers but barely making it to the playoffs or not even going, and then he asks out and leaves for a better team to go win with. I can picture Herbert being this era’s Stafford, where he has to force a trade out of the Chargers because it is just not working.
A team like Pittsburgh, who has talent but will need a starting quarterback next year, maybe Atlanta, depending on how Penix plays out the rest of the year. Does Philadelphia move off of Jalen Hurts and look to make a big move? Does Stafford retire and the Rams all of a sudden have more draft capital to get rid of? Minnesota needs a starting quarterback. There are so many teams that would call if Herbert were made available. With the disastrous start to the season, it’s hard not to see a potential divorce coming down the road for Herbert and the Chargers.
