NFL Overreaction Tuesday: Mendoza Mania

Share

The NFL week has ended with a fantastic game on Monday Night Football which leads to more overreactions.

Week five of the NFL season has wrapped up with the Buffalo Bills getting a win over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. Are the Rams in uncharted waters with a losing record and a tough schedule ahead? A new MVP contender has entered the conversation (if only his defense was better). The Seahawks are looking quite concerned about falling behind the San Francisco 49ers. The NFC East? Yikes… Drake Maye is back. There is plenty to overreact to after this week of NFL action and it was a great week for football.

The NFC East winner will finish with a losing record

The New York Giants currently own the division lead with a 3-1-1 record and Jameis Winston starting at quarterback. It is not possible they keep it up right? They recently tied the Washington Commanders who had horrible playcalling and clock management in which the game ended on Jayden Daniels taking a sack with 10 second left and no timeouts left. Absolutely abysmal. Not to mention the Cowboys allowed the first win to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting an undrafted rookie quarterback in Jalon Daniels and the Eagles botching kick return coverage in a London loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The NFC East was so bad this week that even though they had two teams playing each other, they still won zero games this week. Astonishing. Does anybody expect the Giants to keep it up with Jameis Winston? The Eagles seem to be selling this year with the amount of injuries they have had, the Lane Johnson retirement and the Cam Jurgens trade. The Washington Commanders are in a condition where they could fire their head coach. The Cowboys have a great offense but their defense cannot stop anything so far and Jake Ferguson continues to drop passes into the defenders’ hands. The NFC East winner could be 8-9 with a losing record. Especially since Dallas seems like the favorite with the Giants’ injuries and the Eagles woes. The NFC East winner could be like last year’s NFC South winner where the division collapses and finishes with a losing record.

Fernando Mendoza makes his first start in Week Eight

Did I say two weeks ago that the Raiders were going to make the playoffs after a 3-0 start and they continued to play well against the Kansas City Chiefs? Yes, yes I did. Is that the glory of Overreaction Tuesday that opinions can change in such a short amount of time? Yes, yes it is. The Raiders got blown out by the New England Patriots this past weekend 45-17 and Fernando Mendoza saw his first NFL action in a blowout loss. Not that Kirk Cousins was bad, but the game was out of control and the Raiders decided to give Mendoza some live game action. He went six-of-eight for 48 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. The Raiders have now lost two straight games and their next two games are home versus the Bills and home versus the Rams before they take a trip to the Jets in week eight. If the Raiders lose the next two games, it is very likely that Fernando Mendoza could see his first start against the New York Jets which would be a good team to ease him into the NFL. The Raiders have a tough schedule the rest of the way and if Mendoza is going to start this season, the Jets game is the chance to get him his first NFL action as a starter in this league. Even though Cousins did not play poorly, I could see the Raiders losing the next two and forcing Mendoza to start sooner than later.

Jeremiah Smith will be the first receiver taken number one overall since Keyshawn Johnson

This may not be an overreaction based off of the NFL games, but man Jeremiah Smith is a generational prospect. Through six weeks he has 48 receptions, 916 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns for Ohio State. With projected number one pick Arch Manning having a disappointing night with the Texas loss to Oklahoma, Smith enters conversations for the first player taken in the draft. Currently there are three 0-5 teams, the Titans, Chargers and Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins could take a quarterback first overall, but their entire roster is devoid of talent that a quarterback would be set up to fail right away. Smith going to them with the first overall pick would add talent to the receiving room and ensure the quarterback of the future with a great target. If the Titans still believe in Cam Ward, they could look to add a wide receiver one and Carnell Tate’s former running mate by pairing him back up with Jeremiah Smith. Smith and Tate would create an insane young receiving duo that Ward would be able to work with and improve his game with. The Chargers are in an interesting scenario where if they do not trade Justin Herbert, they could definitely add Jeremiah Smith to improve to this passing offense. If the Buccaneers or Texans end up picking first, both of them have their quarterbacks, one freshly paid and one waiting on a contract, where Smith would be an instant wide receiver one option. Maybe even a two in Houston. Smith in Tampa would also pair him up with another former teammate in Emeka Egbuka to run an elite passing offense with a healthy Baker Mayfield. Smith would be the best receiver on any of these teams right now even though he is still in college. He seems like a slam dunk pick that would help any team picking number one right now. He is quite literally the definition of a generational prospect.
