Tyler O'Neill's 10th-inning hit secured a 4-3 win for the Orioles over the Rays, overcoming Caminero's ninth-inning heroics.

Tyler O'Neill drove home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and the Orioles survived Junior Caminero's game-tying hit in the ninth to beat the Rays, 4-3, at Tropicana Field.

Orioles Strike First, Rays Answer on Error

Neither offense made much noise against the starting pitchers in the opening inning, but Baltimore broke through in the second after Gunnar Henderson singled and Christian Franklin walked. Leody Taveras followed with a ground-ball single to left that brought Henderson home for a 1-0 lead.

The Rays answered in an unusual third inning. Richie Palacios opened with a double, and Taylor Walls put a ball in play that initially produced a safe call before Baltimore challenged the tag. The call was overturned, with Walls retired at second, but Palacios reached third. He then scored when catcher Carlos Narváez made a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. The game was even at 1-1.

Alonso and Encarnacion-Strand Go Deep

Pete Alonso put Baltimore back in front in the fifth. After Carlos Narváez and O'Neill struck out, Alonso sent his 27th homer of the season to right-center field for a 2-1 lead. Jackson Holliday followed with a double, though the Orioles could not add another run.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand gave Baltimore more breathing room an inning later. With one out in the sixth, he drove his fifth home run of the season to left-center, pushing the lead to 3-1. That was the first of two Baltimore runs that came on solo homers, and the Orioles were in position to turn the game over to their bullpen.

Rays Close Within One

Tampa Bay refused to let the game get away in the sixth. Liam Hicks walked to begin the inning, moved to second on Chandler Simpson's groundout and reached third when Jonny DeLuca grounded out. Cedric Mullins then drilled a triple to center, scoring Hicks and cutting Baltimore's lead to 3-2.

Baltimore made a pair of pitching changes in the seventh and eighth and protected the one-run margin through eight innings. Alex Hoppe retired two of the first three batters he faced in the seventh before Josh Walker entered to get the final out. Rico Garcia then worked a clean eighth, retiring Simpson, DeLuca and Mullins in order.

Caminero Forces Extras

The Rays finally caught Baltimore in the ninth. Andrew Kittredge retired Palacios and pinch-hitter Victor Mesa Jr. before Yandy Díaz lined a single to center. Jorge Mateo entered as the pinch-runner, and Jonathan Aranda followed with a ground-ball single that moved Mateo to third.

Caminero came through with the tying hit, sending a soft ground-ball single toward third baseman Encarnacion-Strand. Mateo scored, Aranda moved to second, and Tampa Bay had erased the deficit. Kittredge avoided further damage when Nick Fortes popped out in foul territory, sending the game to extra innings tied at 3-3.

O'Neill Comes Through in the 10th

Colton Cowser ran for Narváez, the automatic runner at second to open the 10th, and O'Neill immediately made the move pay off. He lined a sharp single to center off Bryan Baker, bringing Cowser home and putting Baltimore ahead, 4-3.

Alonso added another single, and Holliday successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third. After Dylan Beavers struck out, Baker intentionally walked Henderson to load the bases, then struck out Encarnacion-Strand to limit the Orioles to one run.

Cam Sanders took over for the bottom of the 10th with Fortes as the automatic runner. Simpson lined out to Cowser, DeLuca walked, and Sanders struck out Mullins and Palacios to finish it. O'Neill's hit supplied the deciding run, while Baltimore's bullpen recovered from the ninth-inning tie to close out a 4-3 victory in 10 innings.

The Orioles' victory over the Rays in extra innings showcased their resilience and strategic execution. Tyler O'Neill's decisive hit in the 10th inning and the bullpen's recovery highlighted Baltimore's ability to perform under pressure. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on this intense matchup.
