Former eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao has confirmed that plans for a long-discussed rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. remain active, although the bout is now being targeted for next year.
Speaking in a recent interview with FightHype, Pacquiao said both camps are still working to finalize the event's schedule but acknowledged that unresolved legal matters involving Mayweather have delayed the announcement of an official date.
"We're finalising the final date. Yes, it will be next year. I hope he will fix his problems with the lawsuit," Pacquiao said.
Negotiations Continue
The Filipino boxing icon's comments provide one of the clearest updates on the status of the proposed rematch, which has been the subject of speculation for several months. While negotiations are continuing, Pacquiao indicated that progress depends in part on Mayweather resolving his ongoing legal issues before the fight can move forward.
Pacquiao's statement comes as anticipation continues to build among boxing fans who have long hoped to see the two legendary fighters share the ring once again. Although no official contract or event details have been announced, his remarks suggest discussions remain active behind the scenes and that both sides are still interested in making the rematch a reality.
A Historic Rivalry
The two boxing greats first met on May 2, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in what was promoted as the "Fight of the Century." The blockbuster showdown generated record-breaking pay-per-view sales and became one of the highest-grossing events in boxing history.
After 12 rounds, Mayweather earned a unanimous decision victory, extending his undefeated professional record while unifying the WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO welterweight world titles.
Years of Rematch Speculation
Following that historic encounter, fans have repeatedly called for a second meeting between Pacquiao and Mayweather. Over the years, both fighters have occasionally fueled speculation by discussing the possibility of a rematch during interviews and public appearances.
Despite recurring rumors and reports, negotiations have yet to produce an official agreement.
Waiting on Final Details
Pacquiao's latest update is significant because it provides a realistic timeline for when the highly anticipated contest could take place. While he expressed optimism that the fight will happen next year, he also made it clear that the remaining legal issues must first be resolved before the event can be finalized.
Neither Pacquiao nor Mayweather has disclosed additional details regarding the venue, weight class, or promotional arrangements for the proposed rematch. Likewise, no official announcement has been made by either fighter's management team or promotional representatives regarding a finalized agreement.
Pacquiao and Mayweather Today
At 47 years old, Pacquiao remains one of boxing's most accomplished figures. The Filipino legend recently returned to professional competition, once again demonstrating his ability to compete at the sport's highest level despite a career spanning more than three decades.
Mayweather, meanwhile, officially retired with a perfect professional record of 50 wins and 0 losses. Although he has remained active through exhibition bouts, a return to sanctioned professional competition against Pacquiao would rank among the biggest events in modern boxing if the fight is ultimately confirmed.
On the Horizon
For now, Pacquiao's latest comments indicate that negotiations remain ongoing, but fans may have to wait until next year before the long-awaited rematch can finally materialize.
Until an official announcement is made, the proposed showdown remains under negotiation, with further developments expected once scheduling is finalized and the legal matters referenced by Pacquiao have been resolved.
