Patrick Cantlay Earns Team USA Captain’s Pick for 2026 Presidents Cup

Patrick Cantlay secures a captain's pick for the 2026 Presidents Cup, emphasizing his experience and successful partnership with Xander Schauffele.

Patrick Cantlay has officially been selected as one of six captain’s picks for the United States team at the 2026 Presidents Cup, giving the eight-time PGA Tour winner another opportunity to compete on the international team-golf stage. U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker announced Cantlay’s selection on September 1, completing an American roster that already included six automatic qualifiers. Cantlay joins Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Chris Gotterup, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun among Snedeker’s wildcard selections. The decision gives Cantlay his fourth Presidents Cup appearance, following previous appearances in 2019, 2022 and 2024.

Cantlay's Selection and Team Dynamics

Cantlay’s selection is particularly notable because he did not qualify automatically through the points standings. The United States’ six automatic qualifiers were Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa, leaving Snedeker with six discretionary selections to complete the 12-man team. Cantlay finished outside those automatic positions, but his extensive experience in team competitions made him an attractive choice. According to the PGA Tour’s team announcement, Cantlay has eight PGA Tour victories and has established himself as one of the more experienced American players in match play. His Presidents Cup résumé is especially compelling: across his first three appearances, he has accumulated a 10-4-0 record, giving him a winning percentage of more than 71 percent.

Partnership with Xander Schauffele

One of the biggest reasons Cantlay remains valuable to Team USA is his chemistry with Xander Schauffele, who was also selected by Snedeker. The pair have developed one of the most recognizable partnerships in recent American team golf. Their history together extends beyond the Presidents Cup and includes multiple Ryder Cup appearances, while their Presidents Cup partnership has been particularly effective in foursomes. The PGA Tour notes that Schauffele has a 4-1-0 foursomes record in Presidents Cup competition, with all five of those matches coming alongside Cantlay. That history gives Snedeker an established pairing option rather than forcing him to build every partnership from scratch once competition begins. Cantlay and Schauffele have also played together repeatedly in previous Presidents Cups, making their familiarity potentially important when the margins between teams are decided by a handful of holes.

Season Performance and Selection Significance

The selection also reflects the distinction between individual golf form and team-event value. Cantlay’s 2026 season has not produced the kind of dominant run that would make his selection automatic, and his results have been mixed. His season included a T8 at the Rocket Classic and a T12 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, while he also finished T17 at the Memorial and T35 at the PGA Championship. Most significantly, Cantlay finished runner-up to Wyndham Clark at the 2026 BMW Championship, where Clark closed at 17-under 263 and won by three strokes. That result demonstrated that Cantlay remained capable of contending deep into elite PGA Tour fields even without the consistency of his strongest seasons.

Strategic Importance and Future Outlook

Snedeker’s decision becomes even more significant when viewed alongside the other players who were left off the final roster. Ben Griffin and J.J. Spaun, both members of the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team, were among the notable omissions from the Presidents Cup lineup. Griffin ranked eighth and Spaun 10th in the relevant Presidents Cup standings after the BMW Championship, but neither received one of Snedeker’s six picks. Cantlay, meanwhile, was selected despite sitting 13th. The decision illustrates how captains can weigh factors beyond points rankings, including match-play history, experience, team chemistry and the ability to contribute in specific formats. Golf.com described Cantlay as one of the veterans chosen alongside Thomas and Schauffele, while the official announcement emphasized the strength and leadership of Snedeker’s overall team room.

Cantlay will now prepare for the 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club in Illinois from September 24-27, where Team USA will attempt to extend its extraordinary dominance in the event. The United States enters the competition with a 13-1-1 all-time Presidents Cup record and has won the last 10 editions. The International Team, captained by Geoff Ogilvy, will bring an experienced group led by players such as Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, Ryan Fox and Tom Kim, while adding rookies including Nick Taylor, Nico Echavarria and Ryo Hisatsune. For Cantlay, the assignment is about more than simply adding another appearance to his résumé. His proven record, comfort in foursomes and established partnership with Schauffele give Snedeker a player who can potentially be deployed strategically across multiple sessions. With Medinah providing the stage, Cantlay’s captain’s pick could ultimately prove to be one of the most consequential veteran selections on the American side.
