Thibaut Courtois is set to renew his contract with Real Madrid until 2028. Sooner rather than later, the club will also have to assess the futures of other players in José Mourinho’s squad. The situations involving Rodrygo, Éder Militão and Antonio Rüdiger are expected to be resolved over the coming months.

Real Madrid are beginning to plan for the future by securing the long-term futures of their key players. At the start of the season, the club reached a preliminary agreement with Jude Bellingham to extend his contract, according to MARCA. The same happen with Brahim Díaz, whose deal was due to expire in the summer of 2027. Now it is Thibaut Courtois’s turn, with the Belgian expected to remain at the Santiago Bernabéu until at least the summer of 2028. Several other players will be assessed in the coming months.

According to MARCA, the Belgian goalkeeper has reached a preliminary agreement with Real Madrid to extend his contract by another 12 months. The club believes there are no better options on the market to replace a goalkeeper many at the Bernabéu consider the best in the club’s history. Courtois joins Brahim and Bellingham as the first major contract deals the club has been working on this season.

Other players will soon come under consideration. After reaching an agreement with Brahim, Real Madrid know that Antonio Rüdiger, Éder Militão and Rodrygo are among those whose contracts are approaching their final stages. Although other squad members also have deals expiring in 2027 or 2028, the three players mentioned are particularly important when it comes to determining how the squad could be structured for next season.

Let’s start with Rüdiger. The German defender is under contract until 2027, and any renewal will depend both on the potential signings the club makes in his position and on his physical condition. A knee problem has cost him playing time and appearances over recent seasons. The club is not expected to begin assessing a new deal or holding meetings with his representatives until the final quarter of the season.

The situations involving the two Brazilian players are more complicated. Both are recovering from serious injuries. Although Militão has repeatedly demonstrated that he can return to competition despite suffering ligament tears, Real Madrid believe there is no need to rush a decision about his future. If he can regain some physical stability, the club would normally be expected to offer him a new deal.

Rodrygo is considered the most difficult case at Real Madrid. The Brazilian endured a difficult period of form before suffering an injury against Getafe last season. The fact that he has gone several seasons without surpassing the goal and assist totals from his best campaigns does not play in his favor. His contract runs until 2028, while several younger players are increasingly demanding more playing time and a greater role in the team.

After reaching preliminary agreements with Bellingham and Brahim, Real Madrid will also renew Courtois’s contract. Following these negotiations, the club is expected to take several months to assess its options before deciding the futures of players such as Rüdiger, Militão and Rodrygo. The Real Madrid squad for 2027–28 is already beginning to take shape.
