Lee had four hits, including a double and a homer, McGonigle’s triple and Greene’s home run complete comeback.
The Detroit Tigers made a big comeback with a five run eighth inning to beat the Chicago White Sox 11-8.
The offense for both teams was the story of the game.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Colt Keith doubled and then scored on a wild pitch that catcher Kyle Teel couldn’t locate.
The White Sox answered with six unearned runs in their half of the first inning. Tommy Pham walked with one out and Munetaka Murakami walked with two outs. Chase Meidroth then reached on an error by second baseman Gleyber Torres. Pham then scored on a wild pitch from Tiger starter Andrew Sears, followed by Teel getting hit by a pitch. Brenton Doyle then reached on an error by third baseman Hao-Yu Lee, allowing Murakami to score. The second chance the Tigers had to end the inning. Colson Montgomery then doubled, scoring three runs. Miguel Vargas capped off the inning with a double to score Montgomery and make the score 6-1.
Sears only lasted two outs into the ballgame. His line was .2 innings pitched, one hit, six runs, no earned runs, three walks, and no strikeouts.
Kevin McGonigle added a run for the Tigers in the third inning; he hit a single that scored Eduardo Valencia.
Miguel Vargas seemed to put the game away in the bottom half of the third inning. He hit a two-run homer that scored Doyle to push the lead to 8-2.
The Tigers weren’t done scoring.
In the fifth inning, the Tigers added three runs to make it a ballgame. Max Clark walked, Valencia and Lee singled to load the bases. McGonigle then tripled to right field to score all three baserunners, cutting the six-run lead in half.
White Sox starter David Sandlin pitched into the fifth inning but didn’t manage to record an out. His final line was 4 innings pitched, seven hits, five earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.
Lee and Clark were involved again to add a run in the sixth inning for the Tigers. Clark singled and then showed his elite speed scoring on a double from Lee, bringing the score to 8-6.
The usual suspects showed up again in the eighth inning for the Tigers to put up five runs. Valencia was hit by a pitch and then Lee homered to tie the game 8-8. McGonigle walked and got to second on a wild pitch. Torres then singled, and a signal mix-up from third base coach Billy Boyer caused McGonigle to stop at third base. John Peck then pinch ran for Torres and was picked off, it looked like the Tigers would squander the chance to take the lead. Dillon Dingler came through with a single and scored McGonigle. Riley Greene then put an exclamation point on the lead with a two-run blast to make the score 11-8.
The Tigers bullpen pitched well, having to cover so many innings. Beau Brieske, Brant Hurter, Tyler Kinley, Drew Sommers, and Kenley Jansen all worked in relief.
