New agreement through 2036 underscores confidence in Whitman’s leadership and continued progress across key athletic programs
The University of Illinois has solidified its long-term leadership structure by approving a contract extension for athletic director Josh Whitman that will keep him in the role through 2036. The extension, formally approved by the university’s board of trustees, includes a significant salary increase and structured incentives that reflect sustained confidence in Whitman’s direction of the athletic department.
Whitman, who has served as Illinois’ athletic director since February 2016, will earn $2.15 million annually beginning in the 2026 to 27 academic year. The updated salary represents an increase of more than $600,000. In addition to his base pay, the agreement includes a $500,000 annual retention bonus, awarded each June 30 for every year he remains in the position.
Over the duration of the contract, Whitman’s base compensation is projected to total $26.1 million. With the inclusion of retention bonuses, that figure could rise to approximately $31.1 million. The structure of the deal also provides consistent growth, with Whitman’s base salary set to increase by $100,000 each year throughout the agreement.
The contract includes provisions aimed at maintaining continuity in leadership, including restrictions related to pursuing similar roles at other universities during the term. This element reinforces Illinois’ commitment to long-term stability in a rapidly evolving college athletics landscape.
At 47, Whitman is among the longer-tenured athletic directors at the highest levels of college sports. University officials credited him with guiding Illinois toward sustained success across its athletic programs while strengthening the department’s overall foundation. His tenure has been marked by measurable progress in both performance and program visibility.
That progress is reflected in the department’s flagship sports. Illinois men’s basketball has made a Final Four appearance during Whitman’s tenure, a notable achievement for the program. Meanwhile, the football team has recorded the most successful two-year stretch in program history, totaling 19 wins over that span. Those results have helped elevate Illinois’ competitiveness within its conference.
A key factor in that advancement has been Whitman’s leadership in coaching decisions. He hired Brad Underwood to lead the men’s basketball program and Bret Bielema to take over the football program. Both moves have contributed to improved performance and stability within their respective teams.
Whitman’s ties to the university date back to his playing days. He was a tight end for Illinois from 1997 to 2000 before continuing his career professionally in the National Football League. His familiarity with the institution has been a consistent asset throughout his tenure as an administrator.
Before returning to Illinois, Whitman gained experience as an athletic director at the University of Wisconsin to La Crosse and later at Washington University in St. Louis. Those roles helped shape his administrative approach and prepared him to lead a major Division I program.
This extension marks the fifth time Illinois has renewed Whitman’s contract since his initial hiring, highlighting a continued commitment to his leadership. As college athletics continues to change, Illinois has prioritized consistency at the top of its athletic department.
With Whitman now under contract through 2036, the university is positioned to build on its recent progress with a stable and experienced leader in place. The agreement reflects both the results achieved during his tenure and a clear commitment to future success.
