Bret Bielema Questions SEC Bias After Illinois’ Win Over Nebraska

Share

Illinois head coach suggests the Fighting Illini would receive greater national recognition if they competed in the SEC, adding to the growing debate over conference reputation and playoff rankings.

Coach Bret Bielema took an indirect shot at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the College Football Playoff selection committee following the Fighting Illini's 24-13 victory over Nebraska on Friday, November 6.

The win improved Illinois to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play, extended its winning streak to four games and secured bowl eligibility for the third consecutive season.

Speaking after the game, Bielema expressed pride in the program's progress before making a pointed remark about how conference affiliation can influence national perception.

If we were in the SEC, we'd probably be a top-15 team, Bielema said.

His comments came three days after the selection committee released its initial 2026 CFP rankings. The SEC placed nine teams in the top 25, including five inside the top 12, while several programs with multiple losses received prominent positions.

The rankings have fueled debate about whether conference reputation influences how teams are evaluated. Bielema's remarks added to the discussion, particularly as Illinois continues to build momentum without receiving a spot in the initial rankings.

On the field, the Fighting Illini delivered another strong performance against Nebraska. Wide receiver Collin Dixon led the offense with eight receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns, setting a new Illinois single season record for touchdown receptions.

Quarterback Katin Houser completed 22 of 36 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns, helping Illinois secure its sixth victory of the season.

Bielema's message ultimately centered on the progress of his program and the recognition he believes his team deserves. With several important Big Ten games remaining, Illinois has an opportunity to strengthen its résumé and make a stronger impression nationally.

For now, the Fighting Illini will look to carry their winning momentum into the final stretch of the regular season.
