Ohio State Suffers First Back to Back Regular Season Losses Since 2011

Share

A 41-28 defeat against Oregon, following last week’s loss to USC, ends the Buckeyes’ 15-year streak without consecutive regular season defeats and puts renewed pressure on Ryan Day’s program.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have suffered a rare setback, losing consecutive regular season games for the first time since 2011. Their 41-28 home defeat against Oregon on November 7 followed a 30-18 loss to USC on October 31, marking an unexpected turn in their season.

Ohio State initially appeared in control against the Ducks, building a 14-0 first quarter lead. However, Oregon responded with 38 unanswered points, turning the contest around and exposing the Buckeyes’ struggles to maintain their early advantage.

The Numbers Behind the Defeated Game

The historical context makes the slide even more significant. Ohio State went 5,467 days and 169 regular season games without consecutive defeats. Since the start of the 2012 season, the Buckeyes had compiled a 171-24 record, reflecting the consistency that defined the program during that period.

Oregon's comeback was fueled by timely offensive execution and a successful fake punt that helped extend a crucial second quarter possession. The Ducks capitalized on the opportunity and gradually shifted control of the game.

Quarterback Questions Add to Ohio State's Concerns

The absence of injured quarterback Julian Sayin added another challenge for Ryan Day. Freshman Luke Fahey started against USC, completing 21 of 38 passes for 260 yards and one touchdown. Despite his individual production, Ohio State could not prevent its second consecutive loss.

What Comes Next for the Buckeyes?

Ohio State now faces an important stretch of its schedule, beginning with Northwestern on November 14. With Nebraska and Michigan also remaining, the Buckeyes have limited opportunities to regain their footing before the regular season concludes.

For Ryan Day, the priority is finding answers on both sides of the ball and restoring the consistency expected of the program. The recent defeats have raised legitimate questions about Ohio State's postseason prospects, making its response over the coming weeks especially important.
