Wells attended Petal High School in Petal, Mississippi, where he played under head coach Marcus Boyles. He developed his defensive skills through the school's football program and became a productive presence along the defensive front.

He also participated in basketball during high school, gaining experience in another competitive sport. Auburn's official biography identifies his mother, Cyntrell Wells, while his brother Corey later joined him in the Tigers' football program.

As a junior, he recorded 42 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and three sacks. He followed that performance with 39 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles as a senior.

Wells' ability to disrupt opposing offenses earned him recruiting attention. He received a three-star rating from 247Sports and recognition from Rivals and ESPN in their Mississippi prospect rankings.

His recruitment included interest from Auburn, Texas, and South Alabama. Initially committed to South Alabama, he changed his decision and announced his commitment to Auburn on December 3, 2025. He subsequently signed with the Tigers during the early signing period.

Wells' decision to attend Auburn reflected both his interest in the football program and the opportunity to play alongside his brother, Corey.

In an interview reported by AuburnSports, he spoke positively about Auburn's family-oriented environment. He explained that the recruiting staff's communication with his mother and siblings helped strengthen his connection with the program.

He also expressed confidence in his ability to contribute at multiple defensive positions, identifying edge and linebacker as potential roles.

Outside football, his participation in basketball provides another perspective on his athletic background.

His transition to SEC competition will require continued improvement in strength, technique, and defensive awareness. Learning Auburn's defensive system and adjusting to experienced offensive linemen will be important steps as he competes for playing opportunities.

Chris Wells enters his collegiate career with the physical tools and defensive versatility to compete for a role at Auburn. His ability to contribute along the edge or potentially at linebacker gives the Tigers another option as he adjusts to the demands of SEC football. The next step will be turning the promise he showed at Petal High School into consistent production against collegiate competition. How quickly he develops within Auburn's defensive system will help shape his place in the program's future.
