Herta is deeply distraught after being unable to race in the Indy 500.
Colton Herta currently sits 19th in the Formula 2 standings. The Cadillac Formula 1 test driver has had a pretty rough season in the feeder series, to say nonetheless. After becoming a star in IndyCar racing, Herta decided to have a go at F1, but so far it doesn't look like it's planned out well. Even he doesn't want to return to the Formula 2 series next year.
Here's where the situation starts getting worse for him. Herta also doesn't have an IndyCar seat for 2027. So for now, the expected outcome is that he will sit in the duck without a full-time ride barring a few races here and there in Endurance racing and the Sportscar championship. But none of that stops Herta from trying to find himself a ride for the greatest spectacle in racing.
If not an IndyCar seat, then Herta would settle for an Indy 500 entry
Colton Herta already had a set plan for racing in the Indy 500 this year. He was set to work with Andretti Global and pilot their fourth car in the race this May. But when Formula 1 added a new race in Montreal and the IndyCar calendar conflicted with his plans, Herta had no choice but to forfeit his chance.
Speaking about the same, Herta told Motorsports.com, "Yeah, I’ll never turn down the Indy 500. I always want to do the Indy 500. It was a shame this year that I couldn't do it. You know, it was all set up.”
"Yes, and that threw everything out. But it was going to happen, and unfortunately it didn’t. I don’t know what next year looks like for me. But if I get the chance, 100 percent, I would love to do the Indy 500.”
But if not for IndyCar, Herta does have a good reputation in endurance racing. He pilots the #40 Cadillac for Wayne Taylor Racing and recently claimed a podium finish in Petit Le Mans. During his interview, Herta also stressed the fact that whatever schedule he races on, he would also like to extend his focus to the three endurance races of Daytona, Sebring, and Petit Le Mans. For now, he doesn't have a clear idea about his 2027 plans, but he is trying his best to keep up with the commitments he has made and wants to make later on.
