The Hurricanes can turn the loss of their standout receiver as they prepare for a major showdown against Notre Dame.
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit believes Miami can respond positively to Malachi Toney’s absence, using the setback as motivation ahead of its November 7 matchup against Notre Dame.
On November 6, Herbstreit discussed the impact of Toney’s injury and suggested that Miami could become an even more motivated team despite losing one of its most productive offensive players.
Toney suffered an ankle injury during practice on November 4. Reports indicated that he sustained a high ankle sprain and was expected to undergo surgery, ruling him out of Saturday’s game. His potential return later in the season remains a significant consideration for the Hurricanes.
His absence is a major setback for Miami’s passing attack. According to the statistics provided, the sophomore has recorded 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns during the 2026 season, establishing himself as a key target for quarterback Darian Mensah.
With Toney unavailable, other playmakers will need to step up. Cooper Barkate could take on a larger role in the receiving game, while Miami will also look to its other receivers and tight ends to provide additional options.
Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. could also play an important role. He scored three touchdowns in Miami’s 38-35 victory over North Carolina on October 31, demonstrating his ability to make an impact in crucial situations.
Head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff must now find ways to maintain the offense's effectiveness without relying on Toney's production. Spreading opportunities across the roster will be essential against a challenging Notre Dame defense.
Miami enters Saturday’s contest with an undefeated 8-0 record and the No. 1 position in the initial College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame, meanwhile, stands at 7-1 and will look to strengthen its postseason position at home in South Bend, Indiana.
The matchup also renews a rivalry following Miami’s 27-24 victory over Notre Dame in the 2025 season opener.
Although losing Toney creates an additional challenge, Miami still has experienced playmakers capable of contributing. The Hurricanes will need their remaining offensive weapons to deliver as they face one of their toughest tests of the season.
Herbstreit’s assessment highlights an important opportunity for Miami: turning adversity into determination. Whether the Hurricanes can translate that belief into another strong performance will be determined on the field.
