The Road to Glory Leads to East Texas as Toledo Bend Prepares for a Battle of Skill, Strategy and Big Bass
The stage is set for one of collegiate bass fishing’s biggest events of 2027, as Major League Fishing (MLF) has announced that legendary Toledo Bend Reservoir in Hemphill, Texas, will host the 2027 Columbia PFG College Fishing Presented by Abu Garcia National Championship from February 10-12, 2027.
The three-day championship will bring together some of the nation’s best collegiate anglers, all competing for a major prize package and the opportunity to advance their careers on the professional bass fishing stage.
Hosted by Visit Sabine County and the Sabine River Authority of Texas, the championship promises to be more than just a fishing tournament. It will showcase the world-class bass fishing of Toledo Bend, the natural beauty of East Texas and the region’s growing investment in fishing and outdoor recreation.
A Championship Where Every Cast Could Change Everything
Toledo Bend is widely recognized as one of the premier bass fisheries in the United States, and its incredible diversity could make the 2027 championship a fascinating test of adaptability.
The massive reservoir offers anglers an extraordinary variety of fishing environments, including aquatic vegetation, standing timber, flooded vegetation, flats, humps, creek channels and offshore structure. That diversity means competitors may be able to pursue completely different strategies while still finding a path to victory.
For college anglers, that presents a unique challenge. Success won't simply depend on finding fish,it will require the ability to identify a productive pattern, adjust to changing conditions and execute when championship pressure is at its highest.
MLF Senior Director of Tournament Operations Kevin Hunt described Toledo Bend as the type of fishery that can be won in many different ways, making it an ideal location for a national championship featuring the best collegiate teams in the country.
New Sabinetown Facility Adds Another Dimension
A major part of the event will be the new Sabinetown Recreation Area, a tournament-focused facility located in the mid-lake region of Toledo Bend.
The facility represents an important investment in the future of fishing and public recreation around the reservoir. According to the Sabine River Authority of Texas, Sabinetown was developed to support recreational boating, fishing and premier tournament events.
Hosting the College Fishing National Championship will give the new facility an opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities while welcoming anglers, families and fans from across the country.
Sabine County officials are also looking forward to using the championship as a platform to showcase the region’s hospitality, scenery and outdoor opportunities.
A $56,000 Prize Package and a Path Toward the Pros
The stakes will be significant when the championship begins in February.
The event featured a $56,000 prize package, highlighted by a new Phoenix 818 Pro bass boat with a 150-horsepower outboard, along with an additional $10,000.
But the biggest rewards may extend far beyond the championship itself.
The winning team will earn advancement to the 2027 Toyota Series Championship and REDCREST 2028, MLF’s premier championship event. Those opportunities could put collegiate anglers directly on a path toward competing at the highest levels of professional bass fishing.
With top prizes of $235,000 at the Toyota Series Championship and $300,000 at REDCREST 2028, the 2027 College Fishing National Championship could become a pivotal moment in the careers of the anglers who emerge victorious.
The Best College Teams Will Earn Their Shot
The championship field will be made up of teams that qualify through the 2026 Columbia PFG College Fishing Presented by Abu Garcia season.
During the 2026 season, college teams from across the country competed in six regular-season open tournaments, along with the Columbia PFG College Fishing Heavy Hitters all-star event.
The top 15% of teams from each regular-season tournament will earn their place in the 2027 National Championship.
That qualification system ensures that the field will feature teams that have already demonstrated their ability to compete under tournament pressure.
A National Spotlight on Toledo Bend
The championship will also bring national attention to Toledo Bend and Sabine County.
The final day of competition is scheduled to be livestreamed across MLFNOW! platforms, including MajorLeagueFishing.com, the MyOutdoorTV app and Rumble. The event will also receive a one-hour television broadcast on VICE TV during summer 2027.
For local businesses, tourism officials and fishing enthusiasts, that exposure represents an opportunity to introduce thousands of viewers to the Toledo Bend region.
As anglers prepare for the 2027 season, anticipation will continue to build around what promises to be a memorable championship. With an elite field, a legendary fishery, a new tournament facility and a pathway toward major professional opportunities, Toledo Bend is positioned to deliver an unforgettable showdown.
When the nation’s top collegiate anglers launch from Sabinetown Recreation Area on February 10, the battle for the championship will officially begin and every decision, every cast and every fish could help determine who takes the next step toward a professional fishing career.
