Wheeler Dominates Lake Erie Knockout as Birge Clinches AOY Crown

Jacob Wheeler storms through the Knockout Round with 70 pounds, 11 ounces, while Zack Birge secures the 2026 Angler of the Year title in a dramatic Lake Erie showdown

The battle for supremacy on Lake Erie delivered everything fans could have hoped for during the Knockout Round of Suzuki Marine Stage 7 Presented by B&W Trailer Hitches. Jacob Wheeler put together a dominant performance to win the day with 25 bass weighing 70 pounds, 11 ounces, while Zack Birge did enough to finish fourth and officially capture the 2026 Fishing Clash Angler of the Year (AOY) title.

With the AOY race entering the event separated by just 12 points, all eyes were on Birge and Wheeler. Wheeler needed a spectacular finish combined with a stumble from Birge to keep his hopes of winning another AOY trophy alive. Although Wheeler delivered one of the strongest performances of the day, Birge remained steady enough to secure the season-long championship.

For Wheeler, the day was almost decided during the opening period. The Tennessee pro quickly put together an incredible flurry, catching 21 of his 25 bass in the first period. That explosive start gave him the cushion he needed to control the remainder of the competition.

Rather than continuing to force the bite, Wheeler used the rest of the day to explore additional areas of Lake Erie and experiment with different techniques. His strategy was not only about winning the Knockout Round but also about preparing for the Championship Round, where the final 10 anglers would battle for the Stage 7 title and a $125,000 top prize.

Wheeler entered the event knowing that the AOY championship was largely out of his hands. Nevertheless, he praised Birge for the season he had put together.

“Obviously, it’s super cool to see Zack win it after the year he had,” Wheeler said, acknowledging the consistency and decision-making required to win a season-long championship.

While the AOY trophy slipped away, Wheeler now has another major objective: winning on Lake Erie.

The lake carries unfinished business for the Suzuki pro. When Wheeler last competed there in 2020 during the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit Super Tournament, Justin Lucas narrowly defeated him by just one ounce. That result has remained in Wheeler’s memory, and he admitted that he had specifically circled this event when the 2026 schedule was announced.

This time, Wheeler appears determined to write a different ending.

His Knockout Round strategy involved targeting both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Wheeler believes the smallmouth could provide the heavier weights necessary to win the tournament, while the largemouth remains an important part of the overall strategy.

“I think you’re going to have to start strong tomorrow,” Wheeler explained, predicting that competitors could need at least 40 pounds during the opening period. He estimated that a Championship Round total of 90 pounds or more could potentially be required to claim victory.

While Wheeler dominated the top of the leaderboard, the battle for the remaining Championship Round spots was equally intense.

The final minutes produced some of the most dramatic action of the day as Jesse Wiggins, Ott DeFoe, James Elam and Wesley Strader battled for just two available positions. With the Lucas Oil Cut Line remaining extremely tight, every fish had the potential to determine who would advance and who would see the season end.

Wiggins delivered when it mattered most, catching a 3-pound, 6-ounce bass and a 4-pound, 11-ounce fish during the final six minutes to secure his place in the Championship Round.

Marshall Hughes produced an equally remarkable late rally. With only seven minutes remaining, the Texas pro landed four quality bass in rapid succession - weighing 4-2, 3-12, 4-8 and 4-6 - to surge past John Hunter and finish inside the Top 5.

Those dramatic late rallies highlighted the unpredictable nature of Lake Erie and the razor-thin margins separating the anglers.

With the AOY race now settled, the spotlight shifts completely toward the Stage 7 Championship Round. Birge can celebrate a season-long accomplishment, while Wheeler enters the final day with momentum, confidence and a personal score to settle on Lake Erie.

The stage is set for a spectacular conclusion to the 2026 Bass Pro Tour season. Wheeler has already shown that Lake Erie can produce massive numbers, but the Championship Round will demand another day of precision, stamina and decision-making.

One thing is certain: with Wheeler chasing another trophy, Birge celebrating an extraordinary AOY campaign and the remaining Championship Round anglers fighting for $125,000, Lake Erie is ready for one final showdown.
