Sanmartin heads to Washington as Cranz joins the Giants.
The San Francisco Giants have sent Reiver Sanmartin to the Washington Nationals in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Robert Cranz. Sanmartin had been designated for assignment earlier in the week, but San Francisco managed to secure a Minor League arm in return.
Cranz 23, was selected in the seventh round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Oklahoma State. Washington signed him for $190,000, and he gradually worked his way through the organization's farm system.
His 2026 season included encouraging stretches at two levels. Cranz opened in High-A with a 2.25 ERA, a 2.68 FIP, and 27 strikeouts over 16 innings before moving up to Double-A, where he recorded a 3.42 ERA, a 2.95 FIP, and 40 strikeouts across twenty-six and a third innings.
The move to Triple-A brought a tougher test. Triple-A proved to be a tougher adjustment for Cranz, who struggled to a 13.11 ERA and a 7.17 FIP while striking out nine batters over 11 and two-thirds innings.
A power-oriented pitcher, Cranz averaged 95.2 mph with his four-seam fastball in Triple-A. He also works with a cutter and slider, giving the Giants another young arm to develop.
San Francisco expects the 23-year-old to join Triple-A Sacramento's bullpen and provide additional depth. A stronger showing against advanced hitters could put him in the picture for a future Major League opportunity.
