Reports circulating in recent hours about a possible move by the Argentine to Newell’s Old Boys have been dismissed. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated that Lionel Messi will remain at Inter Miami and could even extend his contract with the club.
It was the biggest story in international football over the past 24 hours. Argentine journalist Gonzalo Calvigioni claimed that Lionel Messi was considering, for the first time in his career, a possible move to Newell’s Old Boys. This is the club the Inter Miami captain has supported since childhood and one he has always dreamed of playing for since leaving Barcelona. However, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has ruled out this possibility entirely.
The transfer market expert has made it clear that Inter Miami has nothing to worry about regarding Messi’s future. The player is under contract with the Florida club until 2028. At the very least, he remains tied to the team until December of that year, and there are absolutely no negotiations with Newell’s Old Boys over a potential move away from Florida in the near future.
“There are no ongoing negotiations for Lionel Messi’s return to Newell’s Old Boys despite the reports. Messi is very happy at Inter Miami, and the same goes for his family. Leo wants to fulfill his current contract until 2028, at least. It could even be longer, but that will be evaluated at a later stage,” Fabrizio Romano stated through his social media accounts.
This is not the first time Messi has been linked with the club he supports. Over the past few years, particularly following Ángel Di María’s arrival at Rosario Central, various reports have suggested that the door could eventually open for Messi to join Newell’s. According to Fabrizio Romano, however, that scenario is nowhere near becoming a reality in either the short or medium term.
“Leo Messi is not planning a return to Newell’s Old Boys, as he is fully focused on Inter Miami. Messi wants to continue until 2028… and perhaps beyond, with that decision to be made at a later date,” the Italian transfer market journalist added when discussing the future of the former Argentina national team captain.
A return to Rosario for Messi would be difficult for several reasons. It is not simply a matter of sporting considerations or the commercial interests he has built around Inter Miami. His family’s lifestyle in the southern United States is a key factor in his decision to make the Herons his final club. For now, and until further notice, seeing Messi wearing the Newell’s Old Boys shirt remains nothing more than a dream for fans in Argentina.
