A move closer to home ends his one-season Giants stint.
Hunter Mense is leaving the Giants to become an assistant hitting coach with the Kansas City Royals, according to the report. His departure comes after just one season on Tony Vitello's coaching staff.
After four seasons as an assistant hitting coach in Toronto, the 42-year-old joined San Francisco last offseason. During his only year with the club, the Giants hit .245/.306/.400 and posted a 97 wRC+.
Returning to Missouri brings him closer to home. He grew up in Liberty, while his wife, Nicolette, works as a dietitian for the Kansas City Chiefs, he also knows Tony Vitello from their time at the University of Missouri, where Vitello coached him from 2004 to 2006.
Oscar Bernard is now the Giants' only hitting coach on staff as the club considers its next move. Mense's exit leaves Vitello with a vacancy to address ahead of the coming season.
San Francisco is making adjustments on the pitching side, too. Assistant pitching coach Christian Wonders is expected to become director of pitching, with more responsibility for player development in the Minor Leagues.
Justin Meccage and Jesse Chavez are expected to remain in their roles as pitching coach and bullpen coach. Frank Anderson, meanwhile, is set to move from director of pitching to assistant pitching coach on the Major League staff.
