Michigan turns its season opener into a night UConn won't soon forget.
The Wolverines made an immediate statement in their season debut.

The fifth-ranked Wolverines defeated No. 2 UConn 77-66 on Thursday night at Crisler Center, handing the Huskies their first regular-season loss since February 6, 2025, and ending a 39-game winning streak in the process.
Te'Yala Delfosse led Michigan with a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Olson added 19 points. Four Wolverines finished in double figures as Michigan secured one of the biggest victories in program history.
The result marked Michigan's third victory over a top-five opponent and its highest-ranked win to date. It also represented the first matchup between two top-five women's basketball teams in the Associated Press Top 25 to be played at Crisler Center.
UConn opened with a 21-17 advantage after the first quarter, with freshman Jovana Popovic providing an early scoring spark. Michigan responded in the second, limiting the Huskies to eight points while scoring 18 of its own.
A late 6-0 run helped the Wolverines take a 35-29 lead into halftime. Delfosse had already made her presence felt, scoring 12 points in the opening half.
UConn regained momentum after the break, opening the third quarter with an 8-1 run. The Huskies eventually outscored Michigan 24-20 in the period, keeping the contest close heading into the fourth.
Michigan delivered its decisive response early in the final quarter. The Wolverines put together a 13-2 run, creating separation and forcing UConn coach Geno Auriemma to use two timeouts in an attempt to stop the momentum. Michigan outscored the Huskies 22-13 in the period to secure the 77-66 victory.

Delfosse's performance headlined a balanced Michigan scoring effort. Olson finished with 19 points, Courtney Ogden contributed 12 in her Michigan debut after transferring from Stanford, and Syla Swords added 10.
The contributions were particularly important with starting point guard Mila Holloway sidelined indefinitely because of a left leg injury. Michigan received enough production from the rest of its lineup to overcome her absence against one of the country's toughest opponents.
UConn received a game-high 25 points from Popovic. Sarah Strong, the reigning Associated Press national player of the year, finished with 13 points but fouled out after a difficult first half in which foul trouble limited her playing time.
Michigan's perimeter shooting proved to be a significant advantage. The Wolverines shot 44.3% from the field and converted nine of their 20 three-point attempts, an impressive 45.0%. UConn shot 41.5% overall but made only eight of its 31 attempts from beyond the arc, connecting at 25.8%.
Michigan also recorded 17 assists, 10 steals and 14 turnovers. UConn finished with 16 assists, seven steals and 19 turnovers. Although the Huskies held a 40-38 rebounding advantage, Michigan's more efficient perimeter shooting and ability to capitalize on turnovers helped determine the outcome.

For Kim Barnes Arico, the win was an encouraging way to open the season. Even without Holloway, Michigan found contributions from several players, showing it has enough depth to compete with the best teams in the country.
Michigan returns to Crisler Center on Sunday, November 8, to face Wright State at 2 p.m. ET. Before tipoff, the Wolverines will also celebrate last season's run to the Elite Eight with a banner-raising ceremony.
This win gives Michigan plenty to feel good about heading into its next game. Beating a team like UConn is no small feat, especially this early in the season, and the Wolverines will now look to carry that confidence into the games ahead.
