Official: AC Milan and Inter Agree to Build a New Stadium

The two giants of Lombardy’s capital have confirmed plans for a new stadium to replace San Siro. The iconic venue in northern Italy will disappear by the beginning of the next decade. This is a necessary agreement from both an economic and sporting perspective for the two clubs. The Italian Football Federation is fully aware of the project.

Italian football is going through a crisis on several fronts. Serie A is finding it increasingly difficult to compete in the transfer market with Europe's other major leagues. Much of this has to do with the revenue generated by a competition that is nowhere near enjoying the financial strength it had 20 or 30 years ago. Stadium redevelopment is one of the keys to restoring a situation that would have seemed unthinkable just a couple of decades ago. AC Milan and Inter Milan are taking the next step with the eventual end of San Siro.

For years, the possibility of the two Milan clubs building their own stadiums has been under consideration. We should remember that San Siro belongs to the Municipality of Milan, meaning both clubs must pay a substantial monthly rent to use it. In recent years, both teams have sought domestic and international investment to build a stadium that would generate revenue exclusively for their own accounts rather than for the local government. Now, everything is official.

The new Generali Stadium is expected to be ready for the 2031-32 season. This will be the name of San Siro’s replacement following an agreement between the two Milan clubs and the insurance giant. The company itself confirmed the deal on its social media accounts, announcing plans to provide Lombardy’s capital with one of the most modern stadiums in Europe.

“Together with AC Milan and Inter Milan, we have unveiled Generali Stadium, the future home of both Clubs. As the future Official Insurance Partner of both Clubs, Generali will be part of this journey, continuing to promote sport as a powerful driver of well-being, inclusion and sustainable growth for communities in Italy and around the world,” the insurance company announced in a statement regarding construction work scheduled to begin over the coming months.

Unlike other stadium projects across Europe, San Siro will be demolished entirely. Although it is an iconic venue for Italian football and the entire continent, it is a stadium more than 80 years old that requires virtually complete reconstruction from the ground up. The initial budget for the project is estimated at approximately €650 million.

The Italian Football Federation is also a key player in this story. The Calcio will host a major international tournament with the Euro 2032. Milan joins cities such as Rome and Florence, which have already undertaken significant stadium renovation projects.

We are witnessing the final years of San Siro. It is a stadium that has hosted FIFA World Cup matches and several UEFA Champions League finals. Various tributes and celebrations are expected over the coming seasons for one of the most important stadiums in European football. Italy is taking another step toward rebuilding Serie A.
