NASCAR Insider Points Towards New Clash Format for the 2027 Season

Bringing the Clash back to Daytona might not be the only change.

Earlier this year, NASCAR announced that they are going to shift the Clash back to Daytona. It was a decision, once again, influenced by fan sentiments. After all, a major part of the community thinks that Daytona is the only agreeable track to host a pre-season Clash. While NASCAR confirmed the same, they did not confirm any details about changing the format of the race or its eligibility. However, a recent rumor suggests the opposite.

According to an Instagram post from stockcarrn, which is well known for dealing with NASCAR rumors, there will be a significant change to the Pre-Season Clash event in the upcoming year. The reason behind this change stems from the general frustrations that arose from the previous seasons of the race.

From a Free-for-All to an Exclusive Club Again: Welcome Back, Clash

Now, the idea behind Clash was to use the moniker of the fastest race of the season. Why? That's because only the drivers who qualified for the pole position in the previous year could participate in the race. There were multiple renditions to this theme.

Eventually, NASCAR moved on from the exclusive nature and shifted to their regular race eligibility format. All chartered teams could participate, and non-chartered teams would compete for one of the four open spots on the grid. It created a loss of interest among the public who didn't want to see yet another regular race being passed off as an exclusive event.

As a result, NASCAR might be changing it from ground zero.

"Good morning and happy Thursday to you! My ears have told my little brain that the Clash will go back to being an invite-only event in 2027, not where every chartered car was there. And if what I heard was correct, the Clash field will include at least Chastain, Larson, Suarez, Elliott, Hamlin, Blaney, Briscoe, Bell, Logano, Heim, Reddick, Gibbs, Preece, Hocevar, and SVG. But I wouldn't be surprised to see more than 15 cars taking part," stockcarrn posted on their Instagram page.

This new rule is completely different from the way Clash was intended to be. But at least it restores the exclusive nature of the race and allows the fans to get their excitement ramped up once more.
